We expanded upon
our ice fishing experiment from last week by demonstrating exactly how salt helps
ice melt. Students first observed and
tried to “drive” a car on ice. What
happened? It slid all over the ice, because it didn’t have any traction. Then we discussed how in the wintertime, ice
melts when the sun shines on it and when salt trucks dump salt onto the
roads.
So we decided to
investigate this further by adding salt to our icy “road” and having the students “drive”
the cars over the salted ice. They observed
how the salt melted the ice into water, especially when heat was added to it
(like the hair dryer, which represented the heat from the sun). We even tried sand to see if that worked
too. (It did, but not as quickly as the
salt.)
I hope you enjoy
the pictures below! Have a great
weekend! J
